Better Sailing – Intermediate

Take your sailing to the next level.
This advanced course bridges the gap between basic dinghy skills and confident open-water racing at club level.

Sundays: April 12, 19, 26
Time: 9:00am – 3:00pm
Location: Hollywell Sailing Squadron

(Includes race entry fees & temporary club membership)
Outcome:
Australian Sailing – Better Sailing Certificate
Course Objective
By the end of this course, sailors will have the confidence to:
• Skipper a dinghy with crew in open water
• Sail confidently in tidal conditions
• Understand and apply Racing Rules of Sailing
• Compete in club racing anywhere in Australia
This is where you transition from “learning to sail” to becoming a capable club racer.
Prerequisites
• Start Sailing 1 & 2 Certificate (Beginners Course)
• Designed for adults of any age
• Open to youth aged 15+
Course Structure
Day 1 – Open Water & Race Foundations
You and two crew will sail the RS Quest in open water, adapting to tide and swell conditions.
Focus areas include:
• Sailing in tidal flow
• Rules of the road & right-of-way
• Identifying channel markers
• Introduction to the Racing Rules of Sailing
• Spinnaker rigging and deployment (optional third sail)
Day 2 – Club Race Integration
Morning: Skill revision and practical refinement.
Afternoon:
Participation in the Off the Beach Dinghy Sprint Race, guided by your instructor.
You’ll experience real club racing in a supported environment.
Day 3 – Independent Racing
Morning: Final skills refinement.
Afternoon:
Compete in the final Sprint Race of the season — unassisted (but supervised).
You will race against the fleet and receive an official placing.
This is your transition into real competition.

Upon completion, sailors are encouraged to:

Purchase a boat, join the club, and continue racing

Join a crew for Inshore & Offshore Keelboat racing

Enrol in the Keelboat Crewing & Helming Course
(Sail the Blazer 23 or Melges 24)
Mastering foundational skills — safety, wind awareness, sail theory, race tactics, navigation and skippering — builds the confidence and competitiveness required for Twilight, Inshore and Offshore Division racing.
