Tackers 3 – Kids Learn to Sail
Ages 7–12 | Advanced Skill Development
Tackers 3 is the final stage of the Tackers program and focuses on developing confident, capable sailors ready for open-water progression and future racing pathways.
This level builds on Tackers 2, introducing more advanced techniques through fun challenges, games and on-water adventures.

Program Overview
Tackers 3 focuses on refining boat-handling skills and introducing racing concepts in a supportive environment.
Sailors will continue to build independence while learning advanced techniques that prepare them for Junior Fleet and Sailing Team pathways.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is designed for children who have successfully completed Tackers 2 and are ready to progress into more advanced sailing skills.
Course Prerequisites
• Aged 7–12 years
• Water confident
• Completion of Kids Learn to Sail Level 2 (Tackers 2)
By the End of the Course, Sailors Will Be Able To:
• Demonstrate correct roll tacking and gybing techniques
• Understand and perform controlled downwind gybes
• Stop the boat in confined areas
• Sail backwards with control
• Demonstrate sound knowledge of the Five Essentials:
• Centreboard position
• Boat trim
• Boat balance
• Sail trim
• Start and finish races on triangle and trapezoid courses
• Use tactical mark roundings during races
Participants will receive their Australian Sailing Tackers 3 Completion Certificate.
What to Bring
• Hat
• Sunglasses
• Water bottle
• Swimmers
• Enclosed shoes that can get wet (and won’t fall off)
• Towel
• Change of clothes
• Rain jacket (if wet weather is forecast)
Safety Equipment
We strongly recommend the use of helmets (not mandatory but highly encouraged).

Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who have completed Tackers 2.
Course Outcome
By the end of the Tackers 3 course, the participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate the correct method and understand the theory of roll tacking and gybing
- Stopping the boat in a confined areas for a period of time
- Sail backwards
- Understand the theory behind gybing and can demonstrate the action downwind
- Show a sound knowledge of the five essentials:
- Centreboard position
- Boat trim
- Boat balance
- Course made good
- Sail trim
- Start and finish races on a triangle and trapezoid course
- Always use tactical mark roundings in races
You will gain your Tackers 3 completion certificate.
