Junior Fleet – Term 3

Junior Fleet is the next step for sailors ready to move beyond lake sailing and into open-water conditions.
This program develops confident, capable young sailors who are preparing for club racing, Sailing Team pathways and broader on-water experiences.

Ages 7-14
We recognise that kids under the age of 12 may find open-water sailing daunting.
We encourage all junior sailors to try open-water, however, if it becomes too confronting, we recommend staying in Tackers Fleet at Oxenford Lake until they have built the confidence to transition.

Program Overview

Junior Fleet introduces sailors to open-water sailing at Hollywell Sailing Squadron.

Throughout the term, sailors will build skills in:

• Sailing in stronger winds
• Understanding tides and tidal flow
• Navigating channel markers
• Awareness around other vessels
• Advanced boat handling and seamanship
• Independence and confidence on the water

Once sailors demonstrate competency across key skill areas, they may be invited to join the Sailing Team and begin racing in Southport Yacht Club’s Off The Beach Dinghy races.

Sailors may also have opportunities to take part in:

• Special sailing events
• Beach trips
• Camp trips
• Other on-water activities

Junior Fleet is the direct pathway into competitive club sailing.
