Program Overview

Over the course of the program, teens will build the skills and confidence needed to crew an RS Quest Dinghy with up to two other sailors.

This is a tiered program. Participants are grouped by similar age and skill level to ensure the best learning experience and progression.

As skills develop, sailors will be introduced to more challenging objectives including:

• Sailing independently with a crew
• Rescue techniques
• Man overboard recovery
• Single-person sailing
• Introduction to racing concepts

Course Prerequisite

• Confidently able to swim 50 metres while wearing a lifejacket

No prior sailing experience required.

What’s Next?

After completing the course, sailors may be invited to join the Fleet at Hollywell Sailing Squadron, where they will:

• Sail in stronger winds
• Learn about weather and tides
• Develop awareness around other boats
• Progress into open-water sailing and racing pathways

What to Bring

• Hat
• Sunglasses
• Water bottle
• Swimmers
• Enclosed shoes that can get wet (and won’t fall off)
• Towel
• Change of clothes
• Rain jacket (if wet weather is forecast)

Safety Equipment

We strongly recommend the use of helmets (not mandatory but highly encouraged).

Zhik Kollition Helmets are available from Academy Reception for $40
(RRP $169.95)

This subsidised price is thanks to the SYC Board’s safety initiative and the generous support of a Southport Yacht Club member.tuuycpr29qubbaqq.png
